Since leaving college Paul has pursued a career in photography. Alongside his commercial work he has developed a personal collection of landscape photography, themajority of which has been taken around the British Isles. The images explore the atmosphere and character, or the identity, of a particular area.
Recent projects include: the sights and sounds of Britain 's exposed eastern coastline and the changing colours and textures of Epping Forest . The Lea Valley has also been a source of inspiration. The resulting black and white landscapes from this project depict an alternative view of the London in which he lives and works. The images inhabit still and unnoticed pockets of the city as it merges into the surrounding countryside along the Lea Valley . They seek to comment on the way man strives to control his environment, and on the subsequent effects of growth and decay. The result is often striking and sometimes bizarre.
'Bronte' - having spent a number of years capturing details of the east coast he has recently focused on Bronte: a house in Leiston in Suffolk . It started as a document of a house, whose owner, Agnes Deller, was moving on after 33 years. The house, its character and contents have a unique quality: in the eventual series of photographs, the interiors and their objects have a strong identity and evoke memories of past lives. These are intimate portrayals of a time and place through light and colour.
'It's Over' - Paul has recently completed a project on the former factory site of Hawker Siddeley Power Transformers inWalthamstow, East London. The 9 acre site had been a major employer inWaltham Forest for some 80 years, employing up to 1500 people at it's height in the 1970's. It closed for business in June 2003 and the site remained empty until the rebuild. It's closure, with the loss of 172 jobs inevitably affected the local community, having a major impact on the local economy. Paul gained permission to photograph the site before demolition and over a period of 2 months he chose to concentrate on the main interior space. Anything of any value had been sold or taken away and the factory was left in a state of repose.
'Bremer ' - this is a continuation of the 'It's Over' series as a new school is built on the Hawker Siddeley site. Starting from a semi-completed state, the images mirror those of the old factory, one, empty and waiting to be demolished, the other, empty and waiting for completion. Each has an air of expectancy and they often bear amazing similarities, though the buildings span 90 years of life. The images travel full circle from demolition to regeneration. Paul is currently working towards an exhibition of some of these images accompanied by archive images and oral history material from ex-employees.He is also looking to show the images in their own right.
